How To Maximize Your Washer Efficiency & Avoid Washer Repair Cost In Calgary.

Over time your washer is bound to run into a hiccup or two, especially as it begins to age. By using your machine properly, and performing regular maintenance, you can not only get cleaner clothes, but extend the life of your washing machine as well. Keep reading for washing tips that will not only help your clothes come out cleaner, but will ensure your washer lasts longer as well.

If you do run into trouble with your washer, and need washer repair services in Calgary, give First Aid Appliance Repair a call at 1-888-484-9993 today or book an appointment online.

Don’t Overload

Putting too many clothes to your washer can actually damage the machine. When water is added to the clothes it increases their weight, and if there is too much weight, it means that the drum is not able to spin properly. Not only does this mean that the clothes aren’t getting cleaned properly, it also means that the machine will experience more issues over time. Your clothes should fill the washer drum, but you should not have to shove them in tightly.

Use the Correct Speed

Just like making sure you select the correct load size, you need to make sure that you are using the correct spinning speed for the size of the load you are washing. The machine will start to experience malfunctions If you are constantly using the high spinning speeds to wash your loads even if it’s unnecessary. This could potentially damage your washer in the long run if you constantly have it on the wrong speed. Using the right speed will not only keep your clothing lasting longer, but it will keep your washer lasting longer as well.

washer repair services calgaryUse the Right Detergent

Some detergents will work better in certain washers. For instance, detergent that is made for high-efficiency machines will work better than any regular brand of detergent. You should also make sure to use the correct amount, as using too much will create extra suds and can leave your “clean” clothes soapy after the cycle, which will mean you have to put them in longer. But using too little won’t clean your clothes at all. Using too much can also lead to mold if it is not cleaned properly. Be sure to check the label of the detergent carefully and see if it is compatible with your washing machine.

REFRIGERATOR MAINTENANCE 101

Your refrigerator can hold hundreds of dollars in groceries. This makes your fridge an important appliance to have in your home, and if it breaks down you will lose out on all the money spent on groceries. No one wants to run into this problem, especially over the holidays, but luckily there are ways to avoid fridge malfunctions. Keep reading for 3 maintenance tips for fridges.Fridge

Needs a fridge repair in Calgary? Contact First Aid Appliance Repair today for a quick and efficient repair.

Make Sure Your Fridge is Level

Your fridge will run more efficiently if it is level. A level appliance allows all of the internal parts to operate properly. You could actually have a leak if the appliance is tilted on an angle. The process of leveling a fridge can easily be done, but if you have never done it before, it may be better to hire a licensed technician to do it for you to avoid injury.

Coils Should Be Clean

The coils, usually located at the back of your fridge, need to be clean. This job is simple to our technicians, but as you need to pull the fridge out it may be difficult for some homeowners. If you want to clean the coils you should pull the fridge away from the wall and wipe them down. Some fridges have the coils underneath it as opposed to in the back. They must be free of dust and able to vent heat from the fridge to be able to do its job cooling the contents inside.

Listen for Dripping Noises

You may hear the refrigerator making crackling sounds or settling throughout the day because the temperature is fluctuating. If you notice dripping or leaks, this is a warning that there is an issue. If this happens you should try pulling out the drip pan to see if there is any debris or clogs in the area causing the problem. If you find excessive dripping it could mean water is blocked and could possibly be puddling under your refrigerator, for which you will need to call a technician for a repair.

Is your dishwasher not cleaning your dishes properly?

Dishwasher with white plates and steel cutlery

Regular maintenance will help keep your dishwasher from needing repairs too often, but sometimes repairs are unavoidable. If you need a dishwasher repair in Calgary, give First Aid Appliance Repair a call. We offer simple, affordable and hassle-free repairs that same day you call.

While your dishwasher is going to run into problems every now and then, there are some simple tricks that you can use to keep it working its best, for longer.

8 Dishwasher Tips

Loading: Be aware of how you are loading your dishwasher. Make sure that you are only turning your dishwasher on when it is full; this saves energy and water, and results in cleaner dishes. Make sure that you aren’t overloading your dishwasher though; if dishes are stacked, or blocking each other they won’t get cleaned properly.

Clean the filter: If your dishwasher is not draining water, or there is food stuck to your dishes after a cycle, take it as a sign to clean your filter. Every once in a while remove the filter and rinse it. You can also clean it by letting it sit in the sink with hot water and soap; this helps to kill bacteria and remove grime buildup.

Stain colours: Pay attention to the stain colours on your dishes. Tomato sauce can stain the inside of your dishwasher or other dishes, so make sure to rinse the sauce off before putting dishes into the dishwasher. If you notice brown stains inside your dishwasher, then you have iron and calcium buildup. These can be removed using citric acid, such as lemon juice, mixed in with detergent and run on an empty cycle. If you see green stains it means your detergent has dye in it. Try switching to a different detergent that is dye-free.

Use the right amount of detergent: Don’t overdo it on your detergent; using too much soap can cause buildup and even damage your dishwasher. Refer to the instructions on the packaging of your product to determine how much you actually need.

Use fresh detergent: Don’t stock up on too much detergent; if it goes bad it won’t clean your dishes. Only buy what you will use up in 2 months, and make sure to look for expiration dates on the containers. Also, make sure to keep the detergent in a cool, dry space to keep it fresh for longer.

Pre-heating water: You can run hot water in a nearby sink just before you turn your dishwasher on. This will help the water about to be used in your dishwasher heat up faster, so when you finally turn your dishwasher on the water is already hot and will take less time to clean your dishes.

Scrape: Don’t pre-rinse your dishes to the point where they’re already clean when you put them inside the dishwasher. Rinse or scrape off large food chunks or any leftover food off the plates and leave some residue. Your dishwasher and the detergent you use will do a better job cleaning your dishes if they actually have something to clean.

Regular maintenance: Don’t forget to clean and maintain your dishwasher regularly so that it works better, longer. Also, if you start to notice your dishwasher isn’t working properly, call for a repair right away to avoid further, and potentially expensive damage.

HOME APPLIANCE MAINTENANCE GUIDE CALGARY

Every household these days depend on various home appliances, including Fridge, Stove, Cooktop, Oven, Dishwasher, Washer and Dryer. We cannot stress you enough to do a regular maintenance cleanup and upkeep. Making sure that your household appliances are regularly cleaned and maintained is important to not only ensuring that they work properly but to avoid costly repairs as well. We’ve listed a couple of helpful maintenance tips for each appliance to help you with your maintenance schedule.

Kitchen interior

If you do happen to need a repair for any of your appliances, give First Aid Appliance Repair a call. We have years of experience repairing every kind of appliance, no matter the brand or model. We’re confident we can make yours as good as new in no time. We service Calgary and all surrounding areas.

Refrigerator and Freezer Maintenance Tips

  • Clean the coils: Clean out the condenser coils in the back of your fridge and freezer monthly. Simply take a vacuum hose with a brush attachment and run it over the coils to remove dirt, dust, and other debris. You can take a smaller brush or cloth afterwards to get debris that was left behind.
  • Defrost: Defrost your freezer every 3 to 4 months to avoid ice buildup. You can do this more often if you notice continual buildup.
  • Clean the door gasket: Wipe down the door gasket with warm water and baking soda every 3 to 4 months. You should also inspect it during this time to make sure that it is fitted properly.
  • Replace water filter: If your fridge has an icemaker, clean the water filter regularly and replace when necessary. Only use the manufacturer recommended filters.

Dishwasher Maintenance Tips

  • Clean the interior: You should clean the inside of your dishwasher at least every 3 to 4 months. Food, soap scum and other debris can easily build up and grow mold inside your dishwasher. Not only will this smell disgusting, but it prevents your dishwasher from cleaning your dishes properly. Run an empty cycle with hot water and either vinegar or baking soda to clean out the inside.
  • Strainer: Washer your dishwasher’s strainer with warm water and detergent every 6 months to remove grime.
  • Water supply hoses: Make sure that you are checking the water supply hoses once a year to make sure that there are no kinks or leaks in them. If you are unsure how to do this call a technician to take a look for you.
  • Spray arms: Remove the dishwasher’s spray arms and clean out the gets with warm water and detergent. Be very careful when doing this so that you don’t damage the spray arms.

Oven and Stove Maintenance Tips

  • Clean up spills: No matter if your use a gas cooktop or electric stove, any spills should be cleaned up immediately. After the stove has cooled down, wipe down with a damp cloth to remove grime. Once a month, remove the burners and soak them in hot water and detergent to remove caked on grime. The same with the inside of the oven, wait until it has cooled and clean up spills and crumbs off the bottom.
  • Hood and exhaust fan: if your range has a hood or an exhaust fan, clean and degrease them every 3 to 4 months to avoid buildup.
  • Gas Range flame: The colour of the flame on your gas range tells you if the gas is efficient. If the flame on the pilot light is blue, your range is working properly. If the flame is yellow, the gas needs to be adjusted.

Washer Maintenance Tips

  • Clean spills: If you spill bleach or detergent on your washer, wipe them up immediately to avoid damage to the finish.
  • Clean the interior: You should wipe down the interior of your washer every 3 to 4 months to get rid of mold and detergent build up.
  • Touch ups: You can touch up gashes and cracks on the exterior of the unit with paint.
  • Inspect hoses: Just like with your dishwasher, you should check the hoses on your washer annually to make sure that they are tight and free of leaks or kinks.

Dryer Maintenance Tips

  • Clean spills: Just like with your washer, if you spill bleach or detergent on your dryer, wipe them up immediately. It only takes a moment, and will help keep the exterior finish in good condition.
  • Lint trap: Remove the lint trap and scrap off lint into the trash after every cycle. This gets rid of buildup, ensures the dryer has proper airflow and reduces the risk of a dryer fire.
  • Vents and hoses: Make sure your dryer is vented to the outside of your house. Also, make sure that the vent and hose get cleaned once a year. This also prevents buildup, ensures proper airflow and reduces the risk of a fire.

When Should You Turn Your Fridge Off?

Turning your fridge off at night might seem like a good way to conserve energy, but is it really?

Client and repairman near fridge

We’re brought up thinking if you’re not using something, turn it off or unplug it to save electricity. Now, with stricter rules and regulations on energy in Canada, you’re probably taking that to heart and looking for ways to conserve energy and keep that hydro bill down.

Is it the same idea with your appliances? It isn’t! Keep reading to learn other energy saving strategies for your fridge from our appliance experts in Calgary!

Turning Your Fridge Off – Smart or Not?

You don’t use your fridge at night, so why not turn it off? Well, this actually isn’t as energy-effective as you might think. It is not recommend that you turn off your fridge unless you are defrosting or repairing it.

Turning your fridge off over night can cause food to spoil, even if the door remains closed. When you turn it back on in the morning it will have to work even harder to cool your fridge down again to the appropriate temperature; this will use more energy than if it was left on all night at a consistent temperature.

The fluctuating temperatures are another way your food can spoil; your food should be kept at a consistent temperature to ensure it stays fresh longer. Plus, if your fridge is off, how are you going to enjoy those late night snacks?

So should we really turn off fridge under any situation ?

As we mentioned before, the only times you should turn off your fridge is while it is being repaired or while you are defrosting it. If you are going on vacation for a long period of time, for example over a month, it would be better option to unplug your fridge so you aren’t wasting energy and generating expensive monthly bills with an appliance you’re not there to use.If you’re only going away for a week or so you can leave your fridge on. Make sure that you remove all contents before leaving to make sure nothing rots in your fridge while you are away. Also, when you return give your fridge time to cool itself back down before refilling it.

Energy Efficient Tips for Your Fridge

While turning off your fridge at night isn’t a great way to save energy, there are a couple of things you can do to be make your fridge more energy-efficient. Here are a few easy ways:

  • Don’t put hot food in the fridge, instead let it cool first. When you place hot items in your fridge the unit has to work harder to cool them down and regulate the appropriate air flow, which uses more energy.
  • Keep your fridge door closed as much as possible. Also, check to make sure that the door is tightly sealed to keep the cold air in.You can test the seals by placing a piece of paper in between them and try to pull it out; if you can easily pull the paper free, then you need to make adjustments which will require either buying a new seal, or tightening the door. If the paper resists, then your seals are fine.
  • Be sure to defrost your fridge and freezer regularly. If you let frost build up too much, the fridge will have to work harder to keep your food cold. Try not to let the frost build up more than a quarter of an inch; any thicker and your fridge will decrease energy efficiency.
  • Keep your fridge at the minimum temperature to keep food cold. 35 – 38 degrees Fahrenheit is recommended for keeping energy consumption down, but still keeping food cold enough not to go bad.
  • Make sure all of your food is sealed up in containers, and cover all liquids. Food that is not covered up can actually release moisture in the fridge and make the compressor work harder.

Remember to keep your refrigerator regularly maintained, and get it repaired as soon as you start to notice problems. A damaged appliance won’t work as well, which means it’s going to take up more energy to run itself. Do your fridge and yourself a favour and don’t wait to get your fridge repaired.

Don’t think your dryer needs to be maintained and cleaned regularly? Think again!

In the Dryer.

Just like your other appliances, your dryer needs to be looked after on a regular basis to make sure that it works properly for longer and also to avoid costly repairs. Keep your dryer working its best with these easy maintenance tips! If your dryer does need a repair, call our technicians at First Aid Appliance Repair. We service Calgary and the surrounding areas. We offer efficient appliance repairs at prices you can afford!

Dryer Maintenance Tips

Level: Always make sure that the dryer is leveled on the floor to prevent damage while it is in use. Simply adjust the legs of the dryer until it is level. You will probably need assistance for this in order to make sure the legs are at an even height.

Lint Filter: Clean out the dryer lint filter after every drying cycle. This reduces the risk of the dryer catching fire, and maximizes air flow in the unit so that it works better. Simply remove the filter from the dryer and use your hands to wipe the lint into the trash.

Every couple of months you should also wash your lint filter with water and a cleaning detergent. This will get rid of excess lint that you may have missed while cleaning off the filter, and get rid of unseen residues that can restrict your dryer’s airflow.

No Soiled Clothes: Don’t put soiled clothing in your dryer to avoid getting dirt and debris in your dryer that can be transferred to your clean clothes. For example, don’t put your wet beach towels in for a quick dry. It may seem like a fast way to avoid using excess water, but you’re really just putting sand and dirt in your dryer, which can damage it. Only put clothes that you have already washed into your dryer.

Exhaust Ducts: Inspect your dryer’s exhaust duct for bends, crimps and other obstructions that could prevent it from working properly. You may need professional help for this if you have little experience repairing appliances.

At least once a year you should remove the entire exhaust duct line from the dryer to outside and clean it out. Like clogged lint traps, clogged exhaust ducts are another leading cause of house fires every year.

Rubber Gaskets: Clean the rubber gaskets on your dryer with water and vinegar to keep them from getting grimey. This should also be done once a month.

Wash Your Dryer: Every month or so wipe down the exterior and interior of your dryer with a damp cloth to remove dust, grime, excess detergent and other debris. This will not only make your dryer cleaner, but also get rid of invisible debris that could be restricting the dryer’s airflow. Plus, who wants to put their just washed clothes in a dirty dryer?

Fix Scratches with Paint: You can easily touch up unsightly scratches, rust, and nicks on the exterior of your dryer with paint. Find a matching paint colour at your local department store and paint over any marks; your dryer will look brand new!

Does your dryer need some TLC? Call First Aid Appliance Repair for a repair in Calgary. Call 1-888-484-9993 today!

Woman Doing Housekeeping Taking Dry Clothes From Dryer At Home

Young hispanic woman at home, doing chores and housekeeping, collecting clothes and dresses from laundry tumble dryer, drying machine

Is your dryer operating at its maximum efficiency? For most people, the sad answer is “no.” Unfortunately, some people don’t see the point; efficiency is just a word that has little impact on their day-to-day lives. However, did you know that improving your dryers performance can save you a significant amount in the form of your monthly energy bills? With just a few tips from the Calgary dryer repair experts at First Aid Appliance Repair, you can ensure that your dryer is operating smoothly and efficiently, while also saving you some big bucks! Read more below.

Check Those Dryer Ducts

Everyone knows you need to empty out your lint trap after every use, but when was the last time you checked out your dryer ducts? Exhaust ducts are easily forgotten, and can be the cause of a poorly functioning dryer. First, make sure your dryer is unplugged. Remove the flexible duct from the back of the dryer and grab large brush to remove any debris around the area. Then, use the same tool to snag any lint or debris that has gathered in the duct. You can use a vacuum to pick up any stray lint you may have missed. Repeat this process a few times to ensure you have removed all the lint. Finally, plug your dryer back in and test it out! You’ll be shocked to see how much quicker your dryer dries your loads.

Level With Me

You’d be surprised to hear that even the tiniest difference in your dryers leveling could make a huge difference in performance. Use a spirit level to see if your dryer is sitting evenly. If not, use something under the lower sides feet to make it more even with the other. This will maximize the tumbling in the dryer, ensuring that your clothes become dry quicker.

Warm Up To The Task

Many of us have our dryer sitting in our cold, damp basements. However, did you know that keeping your dryer in a cool room could affect the performance of the appliance? Try to pick a room that is above room temperature. If this is not possible, try to find methods of heating up the room it is in. If the dryer is in a cooler room, the dryer will sweat and produce condensation in the colder months, which negatively affects the performance of the dryer.

Tried our dryer tips, and still do not see an improvement? Have a professional dryer repair technician assess the situation for you. Call First Aid today at 1-888-484-9993!

Have you noticed your dishwasher is giving weird smells that just seem to be getting worse and worse? You’re not alone.

With the amount of moisture and food debris that is regularly left inside dishwashers, it’s no wonder that they tend to stink after awhile. Fortunately, there are tons of easy methods you can do yourself to get rid of those disgusting smells and make your dishwasher smell brand new! Keep reading for our list of simple methods for a better smelling dishwasher.

If you tried these and your dishwasher is still giving off a putrid smell, it has problems that aren’t as simple to fix.  For a dishwasher repair in the Cochrane area, give First Aid Appliance Repair a call. We’ll diagnose your issue and fix it the same day!

De-Stinking Methods

Clean Regularly: Regularly cleaning out your dishwasher can help keep it from smelling. To clean, first remove all dishes and utensils. Then, take warm, soapy water and scrub down the interior and bottom of the dishwasher. Look out for mold and mildew that could be growing inside your dishwasher since they will definitely cause odor.

Dirty dishes

Vinegar:  A quick, easy way to eliminate nasty smells from your dishwasher is to run a cycle with just vinegar. Take one cup filled with 8 ounces of white vinegar and place it on the top rack, then turn the dishwasher on for a quick rinse cycle. Although the vinegar has a strong smell itself, it is one of the most best ways to remove potent smells, and the smell from the vinegar will disappear as it dries.

Baking Soda: Baking soda is another great way to neutralize odors. One way to use it in your dishwasher is to sprinkle a generous amount along the bottom of the dishwasher and again turn the dishwasher on with a quick cycle. The baking soda will get rid of any unpleasant smells, and will dissolve with the water for a quick clean. This method can be used by itself, or following the vinegar rinse.

Rinse: Rinsing is a quick and easy way to keep your dishwasher from getting smelly. Simply rinsing large food debris and stains off of your dishes before you put them in your dishwasher will keep them from running off of your dishes and rotting inside the dishwasher between cycles. Don’t rinse them so much that they are practically clean though; your dish detergent will work better if it actually has something to clean.

Lemon: Lemons are another simple, and natural, way to get rid of bad odors. Just simply stick a lemon wedge inside your dishwasher, either in the cutlery holder or the top rack if it has small gaps, and turn your dishwasher on. You can use the lemon with an empty dishwasher or a full one; if you use it with a full dishwasher, it will help make your dishes even cleaner. In addition to getting rid of gnarly smells, the acid found naturally in lemons will even remove minor rust inside of your dishwasher.

Use Regularly: When you leave dishes and food debris in your dishwasher for long periods of time between cycles, it gives them time to start smelling. Make sure you are turning your dishwasher on regularly to avoid giving the items on the inside a chance to fester and smell. If you live alone or with only one other person, and you don’t accumulate too many dishes, try hand washing a couple of dishes such as pots and pans. This might be more work, but it will leave less dirty dishes in your dishwasher between cycles.

Diagnostic

  • Ice Maker: If your fridge is leaking water from under and around the fridge, one reason might be there is a problem with the ice maker. Over time, the seals can age and crack, or the the water-line connection to the ice maker can loosen; the plastic hoses can also get kinks in them which can cause leaks.
  • Drain Pan: If your fridge is leaking from the bottom but your ice maker is not the culprit, try checking the drain pan (located at the bottom of the fridge) for leaks. It is normal for the drain pan to collect a small amount of water, but it should not be leaking. Over time, the pan can crack which can cause leaking.
  • Drain tubes: Occasionally the drain tubes in your fridge can become clogged, get kinks, or even freeze; all of which can cause leaks. You will have to cover panel to located the tubes.
  • Water Filter: If there is water pooling inside your fridge, it might be your water filter. If there is a poor connection between the water supply and the water filter it can cause leaks. This could be do to it not being the proper size or model for your fridge, or it wasn’t installed properly. Also, over time the moisture can cause cracks in the seals.
  • Defrost Drain: The defrost drain can be blocked or clogged by ice or food debris, which prevents the water that accumulates during the fridge’s defrost cycle from pouring into the drain pan. As the water starts to build up, it will leak out of the fridge.

How to Fix

  • Ice Maker: Locate the ice maker, usually positioned towards the back of the fridge, and see if there leaks coming from the connection from the hose to the water line. If this is the problem, try tightening it; if that doesn’t work check the seal around the connection for cracks or tears. If that is the issue than the water line needs to be replaced.
  • Drain Pan: If you see water leaking from the drain pan, take a look at the condition of the pan. If there are cracks or tears in your drain pan, it needs to be replaced.
  • Drain tubes: If a clogged drain tube is your issue, remove the the bottom end of the drain tube from the fridge, and place it into a bucket to place any excess water. Remove the top part of the tube and rinse it out with warm water. If you notice parts of the tube are frozen, you can use a hair dryer to melt those sections, and again wash out the tube with warm water. This should force any clogs or ice out of the tube. You can then put the the tubes back into the fridge. If you see kinks in the tubes, remove the tubes and straighten them out.
  • Water Filter: Locate the filter in your fridge and examine it for any leaks or dripping water. Check the connection to see if it wasn’t installed properly, and readjust as needed. If it is the wrong size or model, or if it is damaged, you will need to replace it.
  • Defrost Drain: If you see blockage in the defrost drain, simply remove it from the fridge and wash it out with hot water. If the clogged ice or debris is stuck, you can you a piece of wire, like a clothing hanger, and carefully use it to loosen the clog.
